Are you ready? Guides to Citizen Preparedness
For information and guides to Citizen Preparedeness, we recommend visiting the American Red Cross, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency websites. These sites provide valuable information to individuals, families and businesses to assist in preparing for and responding to both natural and man-made disasters. As always, if you need further information, please feel free to contact our office at (419) 734-6900 or info@/.

County Officials, including the Sheriff, Prosecutor, Administrator and Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director, have met recently to discuss the local implications of changes of alert levels in the Homeland Security Advisory System.
In the event of a change to the national threat level in the Homeland Security Advisory System, Ottawa County is prepared to convene a meeting of our Executive Group (Commissioners, Administrator, Sheriff, EMA, Prosecutor, and others) to discuss actions that the County will take. The actions that are chosen will be based on the specific information available to the Executive Group. For instance, if a “severe” (red) threat level is issued specifically for water treatment plants, the Executive Group may decide to increase awareness and security in and around the water treatment plants in the County, while not necessarily recommending the closing of public offices, schools, and/or local industry. However, you should be aware that upon the issuance of a Red Alert Level, most of you might be advised to take some precautionary steps.
The Ottawa County EMA will be scheduling meetings with county officials. These meetings are intended to make sure employees are familiar with the Homeland Security Advisory System and the potential impacts the varying levels within it may have on organizations.

The newest version of CAMEO is now available. Computer Aided Management of Emergency Operations is a system of software applications used widely to plan for and respond to chemical emergencies. It is a tool used to assist front-line chemical emergency planners and responders. Local responders can download CAMEO FM by clicking on CAMEO. CAMEO and Marplot have been revised, while the Aloha program remains unchanged.

Potassium Iodide is a stable form of iodine that can be an effective prophylactic in reducing the risk of thyroid disease for those who might inhale or ingest radioactive iodine (radioiodine). Children are at highest risk. The threat of radiation induced thyroid disease diminishes dramatically with age.
If taken in time, the stable iodine saturates the thyroid gland, reducing the uptake of radioiodine. The radioprotective benefit of KI only applies to radioiodines, which make up a percentage of a radioactive release. It is not effective against cesium, strontium or other fission products, which could be released in a nuclear power plant accident. Potassium Iodide is not effective against direct gamma radiation from the plume or ground deposition that penetrates the thyroid. FDA emphasizes that the use of KI should be as an adjunct to evacuation, sheltering and control of foodstuffs.
Potassium Iodide is currently distributed to emergency workers who may be required to remain in the vicinity of the power plant to perform certain tasks. It is also available for institutions (i.e. hospitals and nursing homes) that may not be able to evacuate quickly.
The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has recently made potassium iodide available to the general public. To obtain a supply, contact the Ottawa County Health Department at 419-734-6900.
